Nine feet of glass — and ten bricks for the homeowner to keep.
A home backing onto the Oak Ridges greenbelt, with small builder windows facing all that view. We cut two openings out to nine feet wide, one above the other. Here's a real Richmond Hill project from our books, exactly as we built it.
What the homeowner wanted
The view, finally. Two feature windows in casement-picture-fixed combinations: 108×70 inches in the living room and 108×60 in the bedroom above — each opening a full structural cut, in Commercial Brown 562 outside and white inside. And so the rest of the house kept up, the existing windows and patio door were re-cased in matching vinyl colonial casing.
What made it hard
- Two full structural cuts. Each opening was cut wide and rebuilt with a new lintel, a tripled dimensional-lumber header — 2×10s upstairs, 2×12s down — and a new sill to carry the wall above.
- Nine-foot glass on the second floor. The bedroom unit went up on scaffolding — big, heavy, and set precisely into a freshly cut opening.
- An inspection job. Structural changes meant a permit — every stage of the cut, framing, and support was documented and photographed for the inspector.
- Old and new, one house. Beyond the two feature windows, the remaining windows and the patio door were re-cased in the same 3½-inch vinyl colonial profile — no patchwork.
- Ten bricks, set aside. The work order said it plainly: leave ten bricks from the cutout for the client to keep. A piece of the house, saved on purpose.
