Glass Replacement · Toronto & the GTA

Foggy or broken glass? Replace the glass, not the whole window.

When the seal fails and condensation creeps between the panes — or a pane cracks — you often don't need a brand-new window. Direct Windows replaces the sealed glass unit, restoring clarity and efficiency for a fraction of the cost.

Is it the glass or the window?

When glass replacement makes sense.

A few clear signs tell us you're likely looking at a glass-only fix, not a full replacement:

  • Fog, mist, or condensation trapped between the panes
  • A cracked, chipped, or shattered pane
  • A draft or cold spot even though the frame and sash are sound
  • Cloudy film or mineral haze that won't clean off
  • Rising energy bills from a window that's only a few years old

What's actually failing

Most modern windows use a sealed insulated glass unit — an IGU: two or three panes bonded together with an insulating gas sealed in between.

When the seal fails, that gas escapes and moisture gets in — which is why you see fog between the panes. But the frame, sash, and hardware are usually still fine.

Replacing just the IGU restores performance without the cost or disruption of a full window replacement.

Make it better while you're at it

What you can upgrade while you're at it.

Double or triple pane

Add a pane for more insulation and noticeably better noise reduction — a smart move if your current unit is single or double.

Low-E coatings

A microscopic coating reflects heat back where you want it — warmer rooms in winter, cooler rooms in summer, and gentler on your furniture.

Argon gas fill

Argon is denser than air, so it slows heat transfer between the panes for better insulation — a low-cost upgrade with real returns.

Whole-window or just the glass?

Good to know

Glass replacement FAQs.

Can you replace just the glass instead of the whole window?

Yes. When the frame, sash, and hardware are sound, we can replace just the sealed insulated glass unit rather than the entire window. It's faster, cheaper, and far less disruptive than a full window replacement — and it restores clarity and efficiency.

Why do my windows fog up between the panes?

The seal around the sealed glass unit has failed. That lets the insulating gas escape and moisture work its way in between the panes, which shows up as fog, mist, or condensation you can't wipe away. Cleaning won't fix it — the glass unit itself needs to be replaced.

How much does glass replacement cost in the GTA?

It depends on the size of the unit, the glass package you choose (double or triple pane, Low-E coatings, argon fill), and how easy the window is to access. In most cases it costs far less than replacing the whole window. We give you a free written quote after the assessment, so you know the number before you commit.

How long does it take?

After we measure, we order the exact glass unit to fit your window — that typically takes a couple of weeks. The swap itself is usually under an hour per window once the new unit arrives.
