Six openings, one transformation.
Not a swap job — a brick two-storey rethought opening by opening, in black inside and out. Here's a real Pickering project from our books, exactly as we built it.
What the homeowner wanted
A modern, black-on-black look — and more glass. That meant changing the openings themselves, not just the windows in them: the dining room window came out and part of its opening was bricked up for a clean one-piece full-glass picture window. The kitchen-sink window was widened, on a new concrete sill. Three more windows — the kitchen patio sidelights and the living room — were enlarged vertically. And the old backyard doors were replaced with European tilt-and-turn French doors.
What made it hard
- Structure. Every widened opening needs a new steel lintel and header to carry the brick above it — sized, set, and inspected.
- Masonry that has to disappear. Bricking up part of an opening and casting new concrete sills only works if you can't tell it was ever done.
- Permit & inspection. Structural changes meant a City of Pickering building permit — we handled the paperwork and passed inspection.
- Two product systems, one look. VinylPro windows and European tilt-and-turn doors from a second manufacturer, coordinated to the same black finish.
- A December install. Masonry, sealing, and interior finishing done right in Canadian winter conditions — three days on site.
